Examination

Inspired by Cartier Breson's portraiture, this is the end result of an exercise that aimed to capture the natural expressions and movements of the model. As the photographer, you felt completely detached from the conversation in front of you, instead you began focussing on watching the little movements and expressions that make up that person's outward personality.
I liked Brsson's quote about photography:

"In photography, the smallest thing can be the greatest subject. The little human detail can become a Leitmotiv"

The changes of expressions and posture in the photographs above are very subtle at times, but I think they effectively represent the ways in which the model naturally moves and her little characteristics.

The role was also reversed, as I became the model. It's an intimidating experience, being observed so intensely. At first you become extremely self-conscious and have an almost hyper awareness of your movements. After a while though, when distracted by constant conversation, you almost begin to forget about camera and the strange surroundings you are in. I found it an interesting exercise to think about the reationship between the photographer and the model.
